Startup Kentucky Launched!

April 20th, 2012 - Jeweli Oatley

Startup America’s CEO Scott Case launched Startup Kentucky with Kentucky’s entrepreneurial community this morning at Nucleus in Louisville. Scott encouraged entrepreneurs to focus on using the Startup America opportunity to develop technical capabilities and networking opportunities that will provide the foundation for success.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer shared his enthusiasm to see Startup Kentucky join the Startup America Partnership. Mayor Fischer also used his experience as an entrepreneur to encourage attendees to lean on each other for support.

Nick Such, CEO of Building Layer and Founder of Awesome Inc, in Lexington talked about his start in the tech startup world through the solar car program at the University of Kentucky, the support that BuildingLayer received from others in Kentucky, participated in a Tech Stars affiliated accelerator, and reminded everyone that we can compete with startups across the country.

Adam Fish, founder of Forge in Louisville and CEO of Roobiq, spoke on how to get involved with Startup Kentucky and where to find resources relevant to startups in our local regions.

The fun really started when Scott Case of Startup America opened up the floor for one-minute impromptu pitches from startups in the room. A range of companies pitched, from an outsourced CTO company to a waste energy capture device.

Toward the end of the morning Scott Case met with entrepreneurs in round table discussions. Scott highlighted the importance of laying the ground work of your startup by constantly networking, no matter what stage your startup is in. Getting the word out about your startup and how you’re progressing is a good way to get people involved and attract investors. He said startups can’t ignore the power of social media – staying current is key, not providing perfect content.

Startups Take Over the Kentucky Derby

Startups are taking over the Kentucky Derby this weekend! Startup Kentucky is sending several startups to the Oaks and Derby, including two winners of a Startup America Partnership online pitch contest. Throughout Derby weekend, Startup Kentucky is organizing mentoring and networking opportunities for entrepreneurs as a way to continue the momentum from Startup Kentucky’s launch on April 20, 2012 and showcase the state’s entrepreneurial community.

The winners of the pitch contest are Ralph Acosta, CEO of SkuRun, a company that mobilizes sales and marketing content from Los Angeles, CA and Andrew Sell, founder of HipCycle, an online marketplace for upcycled products from Ocean, NJ. These startups will be joining Startup America CEO, Scott Case and the Mayor of Louisville, Greg Fischer at the Kentucky Derby. In addition to a VIP ticket to the Kentucky Derby, the winners will receive airfare provided by Startup America and its partner American Airlines and exclusive opportunities to network and pitch their startup.

Startup Kentucky is also sponsoring “Startup Office Hours at Oaks & Derby”. Startups will meet with Scott Case, founding CTO of Priceline.com and potentially other mentors during the downtime between races. The sessions will be completely open-ended and will provide a great opportunity for startups to make new contacts and get one-on-one time with the startup mentors.

After the race, Startup Kentucky will join Forge who is hosting an hour long event after the Derby to give startups a chance to meet Scott and interact with other startup founders. The event will be located at the Green Building on 732 East Market Street in Louisville on Saturday, May 5th at 7:30pm.
